I would like to grow a lemon tree on my patio in a container. I live 20 miles south of Houston. What would be the best variety, soil, and size of pot?

Probably the best and most productive lemon to grow would be the "Improved Meyer." The Meyer, while not a true lemon (its juice is less acidic than regular lemons), is commonly substituted for lemon. Any good-quality, well-drained potting soil will be fine. It should be in a large pot (a 10- or 15-gallon black nursery pot is fine, or any other of comparable size), grown in full sun, and watered thoroughly when the soil feels dry to the touch at about 1 inch deep. Also, fertilize it with a diluted solution of a water-soluble fertilizer or use a slow-release pellet type every six weeks or so.
