You may want to read the following University of Nevada publication on home gardening: Home Vegetable Production in Southern Nevada.

It discusses the necessity for soil testing in order to determine the current soil pH (how acidic or alkaline) and additions of compost or other sources of organic matter for water and nutrient-holding potential. You can also contact your local Extension office and ask about their soil testing services at Nevada Cooperative Extension offices.
