Why is the live oak called "live"?

Last Updated: November 09, 2011

The live oak, Quercus virginiana, is named "live" because it is an evergreen oak rather than a deciduous (loses its leaves every year; has a dormant winter period) tree as most oaks are. It is also very durable and long-lived, is very resistant to salt spray, and proliferates in coastal areas where many other plants are eliminated. The wood is very heavy, hard, and strong, making live oaks live longer!
