Bottlebrush, or Callistemon rigidus, does respond to the addition of iron products and to mulching heavily. However, a water-soaked root system can cause problems and winter damage. Bottlebrush is hardy in plant zones 8a -11 and grows to 4 to 5 feet by 4 to 5 feet. Eight to 10 hours of direct sunlight exposure daily is necessary, with little pruning needed. It is a slow-growing, non-native, evergreen with spikes, of bright orange and red flowers, in March and scattered throughout summer. All plants are damaged by severe cold but come back.
