I am a floral designer in the North Dallas area. I use large amounts of vine in my arrangements and my current supplier has retired. He told us it was Rattan. Does a type of Rattan vine, or something similar, grow wild near the Houston area?

After looking at your sample, it appears to be Berchemia scandens. It is commonly known as Rattan vine or Alabama supplejack. According to references, it is native over much of Texas, including the Dallas area. If you cannot obtain it from this description, you may want to contact the Dallas chapter of the Native Plant Society.

For more information on the plant, refer to the Lady Bird Johnson Wilflowers Center website: Berchemia scandens.
