Fresh wood chips can be used for mulch around established trees and shrubs but not around vegetables, annuals, and perennials. For use in compost, wood chips should be shredded, as they are very slow to break down. Add a nitrogen source, such as fresh grass clippings or fertilizer, to the compost to help speed decomposition.
