We are cutting down our banana plants and digging up the roots. We have done this before and some still survive. Can we put anything on the roots to kill them?

Cut the tops off and immediately after cutting spray them with a non-selective herbicide containing glysophate. The herbicide should kill the plants, although it may take a couple of treatments. Use the application rate listed for hard-to-control weeds.
