Rangeland Curriculum Resources
Many agricultural technology, biology, and ecology classes integrate coursework in natural resource and environmental education programs. Teaching the fundamental principles of rangeland ecology in these classes provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn concepts from many science disciplines. Students who study rangeland science learn about botany, ecology, soils, watersheds, wildlife, and grazing management.
Students and teachers need access to scientific information to develop strong curriculums and sound range knowledge. Below is a list of sites providing access to scientific journals, Extension publications and other peer reviewed material relevant to rangelands:
- Range Science Information Database (RSIS) - an excellent resource for both student and teachers. RSIS is a citation bibliography with over 1,400 peer-reviewed professional journal articles that focus on: riparian, weeds, wildlife, vegetation, soils and rangelands management. Each research article is summarized to provide all the necessary information in a quick, easy to scan format, streamlining your search for scientific information related to rangelands. Article summaries and citations link to full text articles when available.
- Rangelands West - this website provides information and tools for rangeland managers, students and scientists. The main site links to individual state sites that provide regional and climate specific information.
The success of any education program hinges on teaching professionals who are enthusiastic about their subject matter. However, many teachers do not have subject matter resources that make it easy to incorporate rangeland concepts into their classrooms. Below is a list of Web resources available for teachers.
- Teacher Resource Guide for Rangeland Principles - developed by the University of Idaho and the Idaho Rangeland Resource Commission
Continuing Education Workshops
Teachers interested in attending summer courses or workshops focused on rangeland topics should check with their national teacher associations, state Rangeland Extension Specialist, or state agricultural program leader.
