At least 16 nutrients are essential for plant growth. In natural forests, these elements are generally present in sufficient quantities for trees to grow. Foresters can help you assess whether your forest growth is limited by the availability of different nutrients. Other factors, such as basic stand structure, moisture availability, soil type, and the presence of insects and diseases, can have a significant effect on tree growth. For additional information on assessing forest health, contact your local Cooperative Extension office which is associated with the state land-grant university.
