How can the loss of nutrients be prevented when removing (harvesting) trees from a site?

The only way for trees' nutrients to remain on site is to not harvest the trees or ever let them burn in a forest fire. Nutrient reductions from harvesting can be minimized by leaving behind leaves/needles and small-diameter limbs to decompose on the forest floor (within fire safety limitations). Regenerating nitrogen-fixing trees, shrubs, or forbs on harvested sites also adds nitrogen back to the site.
