How climate change will alter water availability is a major concern. Some climate models predict longer periods of drought followed by periods of increased precipitation intensity, varying greatly across regions of the United States. In general, effects of climate change on precipitation are less clear than effects on temperature. Earlier snowmelt due to warmer temperatures in mountainous regions is expected to reduce streamflow later in summer. However, there is little consensus in terms of how predictable or how widespread such scenarios may be.
