MMA is an acronym for Mastitis (inflammation of the udder), Metritis, (inflammation of the uterus ) and Agalactia (no milk). MMA hits many sows in indoor herds, while the incidence is lower in outdoor herds. Attempts to find the reason for this difference have not succeeded. The difference in symptoms in individual herds indicates different main reasons for MMA. The explanation may be that treatment does not have the same effect in individual herds. Tests have shown that reduced feed intake in the days up to farrowing reduces the incidence of MMA.
