Do I have to prune banana plants?

Pruning is done to manage the mat (underground rhizome). The more plants per mat, the greater the competition for nutrients and water. Generally, two bearing plants and up to four suckers per mat is reasonable. A pruned banana patch allows air movement through the patch and reduces the incidence of fungal leaf diseases. Diseased leaves are also pruned.
