Honey Bee Winter Loss Survey
USDA-NIFA has funded a new 5 year program to use beekeepers' real world experience to solve beekeepers' real world problems. Called the Bee Informed Partnership, this new organization will, among other things, continue the annual Honey Bee Winter Loss Survey conducted since 2006. Preliminary analysis of winter 2010-11 losses are now available.
Laying Groundwork for a Sustainable Market of Genetically-Improved Queens: The Bee Team
In this latest Managed Pollinator CAP update, Marla Spivak tells us how a tech transfer team has formed to work with bee breeders for stock improvement. Developed from an idea vision and taken to establishment, this program is poised to make a real difference in stock improvement on a very large scale.
USDA-ARS Areawide Project to Improve Honey Bee Health
Centered around improving pollination services by honey bees, the Areawide program for bee health is developing an improved bee management system. This system will utilize resistant bee stocks, improved nutritional supplement delivery, and new, integrated mite control strategies. Information from this program will be founed on long term, detailed research. As this research is finalized and published, it will be avaliable through eXtension.org.
