AUM stands for animal unit month, or the amount of forage that an animal unit consumes in a month. An animal unit is defined as a 1,000 lb cow and her calf. Ruminant grazing animals consume about 2.6% of their body weight per day; therefore, an animal unit consumes 26 lb of forage per day or 780 lb of forage in a month (1,000 lb of animal x 2.6% x 30 days = 780 lb). This measure of forage demand can then be converted according to the relative demands of different animal classes. For more information, see Animal Units of Livestock and Wildlife.
