View as web page

As a resprouting species, common honeylocust cannot be controlled by mechanical methods or prescribed burning. Foliar, soil, or basal treatment with herbicides can be effective. Foliar treatments with products containing picloram (e.g., Surmount), metsulfuron (e.g., Escort XP), or aminopyralid (e.g. Milestone) are recommended. Hexazinone (e.g., Velpar L or Pronone Power Pellets) can be applied directly to the soil surface under the drip line of the tree. Triclopyr (e.g., Remedy Ultra) applied at 20 to 30% in diesel is effective as a basal treatment. Foliar treatments should be applied once the trees are completely leafed out. Basal treatments can be applied any time of the year as long as the base of the tree is not covered by ice or snow. Consult herbicide labels for specific information on rates, timing, and precautions.
