A ranching family needs to consult with an estate planner to really answer this question. Certainly, estate planning needs to be part of the overall ranch-planning process and take into account state and federal rules and regulations. Planning in advance can help reduce tax liabilities and ensure a more orderly transition. From strictly a ranch family operation perspective, the family needs to agree upon goals, define the management structure, and determine how the transition will occur.
