There is no easy answer to this question. Ranching can be a high capital-input industry with relatively low returns. For young people to get into ranching, they either inherit, work their way up, save money, lease an operation, or work for someone else. In any case, it will take planning and dedication on their part. What research indicates that those who incur a relatively large amount of debt (greater than 40% of the ranch value) increase the chance that the ranch will not be able to sustain itself through lower income periods.
