How best can I subdivide my pastures?

The question of subdividing pastures depends on a variety of factors. These include where the water sources are, how gates can be placed for ease of animal movement, the topography of the pasture, and the desired level of management. Although subdividing pastures may allow better utilization of the entire pasture, they also increase the management intensity and the risk for causing harm to the pasture and the animal. Smaller pastures for the same number of animals requires that you monitor pasture use and move the animals at the appropriate time; otherwise, you may overuse the pasture plants and reduce the productivity of the animals. Pastures can be subdivided with permanent fences (barbed, smooth, or electric wire) or by using temporary fences that can be moved when needed.
