The depth needed for a trout pond depends largely on water supply and local climate. Where summer temperatures are high or in areas where ponds freeze over in the winter, one-fourth of the pond should be at least 10 feet (3 m) deep. In locations with flowing water or milder climates, depths of 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 m) are usually adequate.
