How can an unused or abandoned well endanger the groundwater?

An unused or abandoned well is a direct conduit to groundwater. Unless old wells are properly filled and sealed, they can allow pollutants, such as pesticides, to contaminate the groundwater source or aquifer from which other wells use to draw water.
