Rainbow trout are primarily grown in flow-through aquaculture production systems. Flow-through aquaculture production systems depend on water exchange to maintain suitable water quality for the trout and rely on water flow for the collection and removal of metabolic wastes. Water for flow-through systems is usually diverted from streams, springs, or artesian wells to flow through the farm by gravity. With rare exceptions, pumping water from a water source is seldom done due to the cost-prohibitive expense.
