How often should quiescent zones be cleaned?

Quiescent cleaning frequency should be sufficient enough to prevent cohesion of solids, minimize nutrient leaching, and meet compliance limits. Over time, the solids in a quiescent become sticky and viscous, making removal difficult. The accumulation of solids can cause water-quality deterioration in downstream rearing units negatively impacting fish health and performance. Several factors influence quiescent zone cleaning frequency including feeding rate, settling basin efficiency, sludge storage capacity, labor availability, and discharge permit compliance limits. Daily solids removal is impractical and too costly. Approximately one-week intervals represent an optimal balance between labor requirements and discharge permit compliance limits.
