Description: Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and the Northwest Indiana Floriculture Association will co-sponsor an educational program for people in the nursery and greenhouse business on Sept. 8, 2011, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CDT at Sunrise Greenhouse in Grant Park, Illinois. Sunrise Greenhouse is a family owned and operated business specializing in bedding plants, hanging baskets, perennials, vegetable plants, herbs, and hardy fall mums for retail and wholesale markets. During the winter months, Sunrise Greenhouse produces seedling plants and rooted plugs for other greenhouses in the region. On Sept. 8, the program will begin with a tour of the greenhouses, including two Westbrook open roof ranges. Crops in production will include mums, flowering kale, and perennials. Attendees will also have a chance to see Urbinati bale breakers, used to break up large bales of peat. After the tour, Dr. Jim Ethridge will present a talk on common and exotic herbs for the Midwest. “People are interested in herbs and growers need to know what customers want,” says Ethridge, retired professor of horticulture at Joliet Jr. College. Refreshments will be served. The program is free and no preregistration is required.
