Job Title:  Animal Behavior Specialist and Volunteer Coordinator

Educational Background: Laura received her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Biology with a specialization in Animal Behavior for both.

Job Description: On a typical day, about half of Laura’s time is spent coordinating and training volunteers/interns and the rest of her time is spent evaluating animals and their behavior or developing training programs for animals with special needs.

Favorite Component of Her Job: Laura states, “I really enjoy teaching people how to better communicate with animals and I love seeing improvement in an animal once better communication is established.”

Least Favorite Component of Her Job: Laura admits, “It is very difficult to see thousands of animals abandoned by their owners every year and it is difficult to comprehend the fact that not all animals in our community receive proper care and training.”  

Laura’s Recommendations to Those Interested in a Career Similar to Her Own: “If someone is interested in working in a job like mine I suggest that they gain as much experience as possible working with animals. Volunteering for the Champaign County Humane Society is a great way to start!”
