Name: Karen Green
Employer: Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs (ACC&D). This is a group that is working towards development and implementation of a non-surgical method to sterilize dogs and cats to help control the populations.
Job Title: Senior Director
Years with current employer: 5 years
Educational Background: Karen received her Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Communication and her Certificate in Conflict Resolution and Mediation while employed by her current employer. She also has ten years experience working in animal welfare, which she admits was very critical for her current employment position.
Job Description: Karen states, “I manage our Organizational Partners Program, Esterilsol Grants, website and e-newsletters, and other communication with animal welfare and animal health stakeholders. I organize and speak at ACC&D symposia and other meetings and represent ACC&D at other animal welfare meetings and events. I also work on the day-to-day management of the organization, including development (fundraising), planning, and program administration.
My days vary. I spend most of my time working at the computer, primarily writing (e-mails, donation appeals, website content, position papers, proposals, agreements, e-newsletters) and planning or working on programs or special projects. I also have phone calls and conference calls to plan or gather feedback about programs, projects, and products available in our field. I work from a home office.”
Favorite Component of Her Job: “I value being a part of a field I care about and working with others (within our organization and beyond) who share my commitment to helping animals. I also like being challenged by different types of situations that arise and by needing to know how to do a lot of different types of things. (We have a small staff so I wear a lot of hats!)”
Least Favorite Component of Her Job: Karen states that expense reports and managing financial details are probably the least favorite part of her job.
A Special Experience or Story about Her Job: Karen says, “I've had the opportunity to travel to several different countries and meet people working to help animals from all over the world.”
Karen’s Recommendations to Those Interested in a Career Similar to Her Own: Karen states, “My job is primarily about communication, and this is something that is critical in every type of job. Some people think that liking and being good with animals is enough. It's not! Develop your communication skills, including how to work through difficult situations with others. Learn how to express yourself well verbally and in writing.”
