SCALE, Inc (Sequestering Carbon, Accelerating Local Economies) surveyed and analyzed farmers markets in six states in Appalachia and the Southeast during September and October 2011. The study looked at 24 farmers markets in 19 communities in six states: Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The study found that farmers markets were the same or less expensive overall than supermarkets 74% of the time on the range of items chosen. Specifically, produce was less expensive at farmers markets in 74% of the communities studied, by an average of 22%, and organic produce, where available, was less expensive at farmers markets 88% of the time. The study results are available online.
