Released Nov. 8, 2011

The 1099 Economy is a term referring to Americans who work as free lancers or independent contractors. Learn about this little understood phenomenon in a free webinar from eXtension on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Central, 12 noon Mountain, 11 a.m. Pacific). The Web meeting room is at http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/ecop/.

1099 workers represent as much as 20 percent of the overall U.S. workforce. They are largely invisible to policy makers and their economic impacts are often understated in government data sources.

Erik Pages of EntreWorks Consulting will talk about the extent and scope of the 1099 workforce as well as the policy implications. Pages is president and founder of EntreWorks Consulting, www.entreworks.net, an economic development consulting and policy development firm that helps communities and organizations achieve their entrepreneurial potential. The company works with state and local governments, Chambers of Commerce, business leaders, educational institutions and non-profit organizations.

eXtension webinars on entrepreneurs and their communities air monthly on the second Thursday. They are recorded and available for viewing about a week after the live sessions. More than 30 are available on demand at http://www.extension.org/pages/16076/etc-webinar-archive. The December 8 topic is preparing to transfer a family enterprise. Business transitions are always difficult and when the business is a family business, the task is even harder. This webinar will examine what you need to think about and how and when to communicate transitions plans to family and employees.
