In general, barn areas should be smoke-free due to fire hazards associated with hay and bedding. A "No Smoking" sign will help remind everyone of this rule. In addition, people should have both hands free when working with horses (this applies to cell phones and drinks as well) so that they can respond to any sudden movements a horse may make. Some evidence suggests that pets are more prone to respiratory problems when exposed to secondhand smoke on a daily basis. However, short-term exposure probably won’t have any long-term effects on your horse’s health. Still, other people may be sensitive to cigarette smoke, even with short-term exposure, and their comfort and health should be considered. You, as the client, should feel comfortable asking your farrier to refrain from smoking while working with your horse or being on your property.
