Tips for a Water-wise Landscape

Create appropriate functional lawn areas

  • Remove turf areas that are not used
  • Adjusting mower cutting height to 3 inches or higher to help grass develop deeper roots

Right plant right place

  • Use drought tolerant, low maintenance plants

Hydrozone

  • Group plants with similar water uses together

Irrigate efficiently

  • Check sprinkler water use.
  • Consider installing or retrofitting to use drip or trickle irrigation
  • Water in the coolest part of the day
  • Hand water brown spots

Soils and mulch

  • Determine nutrient levels and pH of soils
  • Many native plants need no additional fertilizer amendments
  • Use mulch to reduce evaporation and help with weed control
