This initialism stands for Internet Service Provider. An ISP is an entity, typically commercial, that provides its customers with a connection to the Internet. The connection is normally either digital subscriber line (DSL) or cable broadband, though fiber-optic, wireless, or satellite connections are available. DSL service is carried over telephone lines, while cable broadband uses the cable-television infrastructure.

In a typical arrangement, a customer pays the ISP a monthly fee in exchange for access to the Internet at a defined maximum speed.
