Climate Impacts on Water Conservation

Climate includes precipitation, wind direction and speed, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and temperature.  These forces influence how much water evaporates from surfaces.

  • Wind speed can influence evaporation from plant and soil surfaces.
  • Precipitation influences water availability in soils.
  • Temperature and humidity affect water loss from soils and plant surfaces.

Impacts of Climate Change

  • Competition for water resources will increase.
  •  Distribution of precipitation throughout the year may change.
  • Increased CO2 in the atmosphere may change plant composition.
  • Invasive plants may outcompete native plants leading to extinction of local species. Invasive Species and Climate

Climate Change Basics

Ways to reduce impacts of climate on water conservation in the landscape

  • Switch to drought tolerant plants
  • Reduce or eliminate overhead irrigation during hot or windy periods
  • Mulch to reduce evaporation from soils
