Traditional Contemporary versus Water-wise Landscapes
The main difference between a traditional contemporary and a water-wise landscape is the size of the lawn and types of plants used. Designs can be either naturalistic, formal, or informal.
Characteristics of a Traditional Landscape
- house in middle of the lot
- backyard used for vegetable garden, play, entertaining, barbequing
- narrow side yards
- garage and driveway are emphasized
- plants are well manicured
- large areas of turf
- high water demanding plants
- higher fertilizers and pesticide use
- many of the same plants are used throughout the US leading to a homogenous look
- foundation plantings
Characteristics of a Water-wise Landscape
- plants with lower water needs
- less lawn
- lower fertilizer and pesticide use
- can fit or blend in with local plant communities
- less manicured although a formal look can be created if desired
- using local native plants can increases sense of place
A traditional landscape can be converted to a water-wise landscape by following a few steps.
