Description:
Presenter: Jason Hill, University of Minnesota's Dept. of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering and specialist with Cenusa Bioenergy
Sponsored by: ISU Department of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Management.

Abstract: Achieving the volumes of biofuels mandated in the Renewable Fuels Standard of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will require large amounts of bioenergy feedstocks such as crop residues and dedicated bioenergy crops. Growing sufficient amounts of these feedstocks has the potential to greatly transform the agricultural landscape of the US, and, depending on how this transformation occurs, may have vastly different implications for the sustainability of the biofuels industry.

In this presentation Dr. Hill will describe ongoing research into how biomass can best be produced on the landscape so as to benefit rural economies while simultaneously providing ecosystem services such as greenhouse gas mitigation and improved air quality.

He will focus on new methods being developed for integrating spatial and temporal information into life cycle analysis, which not only allows for more detailed impact assessment but also provides insight into ways of improving efficiency along the bioenergy production supply chain.

Results of this research can be useful to stakeholders both in offering recommendations for guiding the sustainable growth of the emerging bioeconomy as well as providing an understanding of the inherent tradeoffs alternate scenarios may present.
