Question: What is a hashtag?

Answer:

A hashtag is word, phrase, or group of characters preceded by the “#” sign. It was created as a way of threading conversations in Twitter by including the hashtag in all related tweets. Hashtags can be used to participate in a broad conversation around a topic, to organize tweets into a live Twitter chat, or to connect posts about on-going live events. Hashtags are also used as keywords to make it easier to find related posts on social sites such as Twitter and Google+.

Example:
Members of the Network Literacy Community of Practice use the hashtag #netlit when posting content related to network literacy to Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23netlit
