Many have chosen to use dogs to control the geese because a well trained goosedog is unobtrusive, effective and humane.

At the cost of approximately $3,500.00, a trained goosedog is a substantial investment. Here are some tips to make sure you spend your money wisely and get a suitable dog.

First… herding breeds are the most successful for hazing geese. Border Collies especially have been bred over the years to work with people, to gather animals and not to harm them. They have the intensity and drive required to work endlessly and not burn out.

Second … find a reputable breeder/trainer. Don’t just rely on ads. Be sure to ask for and check references from past customers. When you find a dog you think is suitable be sure to see the dog work (even if it is just a video). Get a 90 day guarantee in order to give you time to evaluate how well the dog works for you.

Third… be sure the dog is healthy. Ask that the dog’s hips be cleared through OFA The dog’s eyes should be checked through CERF. The dog should also be spayed or neutered. It should also be chipped, current on vaccinations and heartworm medication. You should get health record with the dog.

Fourth… if possible visit the dog personally before purchase. Have the breeder demonstrate the dog’s abilities before you sign on the dotted line. If your site has water, be sure the dog will swim.

Finally… have the breeder/trainer teach you the how to handle the dog.

Goose dogs can be an effective way of controlling goose problems. But buying a dog is a major decision. Don’t enter into it casually. Do your research.
