Many older adults search for housing options that are low maintenance yet safe and allow for independence. Some housing options provide support services such as a barber, doctors, access to local restaurants in their facility, cleaning services and/or personal care. Below are some housing arrangements you may find in your community.
In-Home Services may be available in your community and can provide the assistance you need to remain at home. These services may include:
- Outdoor work such as lawn mowing or snow removal
- Household chores such as cleaning, laundry and meal preparation
- Transportation for those without a car
- Help with medication, baths, and other personal care
Apartment Living can eliminate the need for yard care, home maintenance and provide living on one level. It can increase social contact, and may reduce housing costs. Some apartments for older adults provide services such as meals. Some of the in-home services mentioned above may also be available in an apartment setting.
Group Homes are suited for those who are unable to do housekeeping and cooking and who need some daily help with personal care or supervision, but do not need skilled nursing care. Group home staff members take care of meals and housekeeping, may assist residents with their medications, and may help with personal tasks such as dressing, grooming, transferring in and out of bed or chairs, feeding or bathing. Recreational programs may also be provided. Some group homes monitor their residents' health.
