IKONOS: Satellite Sensor

Description
IKONOS is a high-resolution, multispectral satellite sensor operated by GeoEye. First launched in 1999, IKONOS was the first commercially available satellite imagery available at <1 meter pixels. Imagery from this sensor is available in a variety of formats (Geo Ortho Kit, Reference, Pro, Precision, and Precision Plus). Each format conforms to a set of accuracy standards, pixel size ranges, minimum-maximum image size, etc. Levels vary greatly in positional accuracy (0.9-50 meters) and are available with or without ortho correction, mosaicking, and stereo images. Organizations considering the purchase of IKONOS imagery should visit GeoEye’s Web site and read about the various image products and their specifications.

11.3 km when pointing straight down (nadir), 13.8 km when pointing off nadir (off to the side)

Bands
4 multispectral bands (blue, green, red, infrared) and 1 panchromatic band

Pixel size
nadir: 0.82 meter panchromatic, 3.2 meter multispectral; off-nadir: 1 meter panchromatic, 4 meter multispectral

Temporal
Images can be captured every ~3 days, but scheduling, cloud cover, and project priority determines the actual temporal spacing of images.
