Small Farms
Manure contains valuable nutrients that plants need. If the nutrients are not used however, they become a pollutant. A ton of chicken manure can contain up to 70 pounds of nitrogen. If commercial fertilizer costs $0.60 per pound of nitrogen, such as anhydrous ammonia for example, the nitrogen in one ton of chicken manure is worth $42.
Manure on lot surfaces and in sediment basins needs to be collected and spread on grassland or cropland. Otherwise the manure nutrients are wasted.
