LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Tech University will conduct the “Basic Horse Management 101" workshop from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. May 21.

The workshop will be held in room 101 of the Animal and Food Sciences Building located on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock.

The program is being cosponsored by Purina Mills.

“High grain prices have yet to deter many Texans from the dream of owning a horse,” said Robert Scott, AgriLife Extension agent in Lubbock County. “Prices over the past year or so for mid-range horses has moderated somewhat which should allow some prospective horse owners to act on that dream.

“The purpose of this workshop is to get new horse owners off to the right start in a number of areas of horse husbandry. We have worked to make this workshop easily understood with plenty of ‘horse sense’ thrown in,” he said.

Topics during the morning session include:

• Basic Safety- Approaching, Tying, Restraint, and Picking up Feet
• Pasture and Hay Selection and Usage
• Basic Horse Nutrition
• Basic Horse Reproduction
• General Health Care and Dentistry
• Body Condition Scoring and Estimating Body Weight
• Permanent Identification of Horses
• Basic Hoof Care

Individual pre-registration is $40 by May 16 and $50 thereafter. Registration includes lunch and handout materials.
