Older people and those with disabilities may have less sensitive skin that causes a delayed reaction to the detection of pain. This delay between occurrence and detection can cause serious injury. To help guard against serious burning or scalding, the water heater should be set at a maximum of 120 degrees F. Scald guards also can be installed to prevent accidental burning.
For bathtubs, showers and sinks, choose single-lever mixing faucets that control both water pressure and temperature. This makes control adjustments simpler and more accurate.
A hand-held shower hose allow greater control over water direction and is particularly helpful when bathing assistance is required.
The faucet for the bathtub should be located close to the outside rim of the tub. This offset position will make the faucet controls easier to reach.
Cabinets should be easy to reach. "D" or loop handle hardware is recommended, as this hardware minimizes the need to rotate limbs or twist and grasp with fingers.
