Concentrates are grain-based feeds that provide high levels of energy, primarily in the form of carbohydrates or fats, to the total ration. Some concentrates, such as soybean-based products, are also an excellent source of additional protein. Horses that are growing, working, in late pregnancy, or lactating may require more energy than can be provided by hay or pasture alone; therefore, it is necessary to provide these horses with concentrates that are low in fiber and high in energy.
