Last Updated: January 30, 2008 | Related resource areas: Family Caregiving

Accidents often happen in a bathroom so it is important to spend time making it a safer place. The following suggestions will help you accomplish that goal:

__ Bathtub or shower need a non-skid mat or strips on the standing area.

__ Bathtub or shower should have safety glass or plastic.

__ Grab bars needs to be installed on the walls by the bathtub and toilet.

__ Towel bars and the soap dish in the shower stall should be durable and firmly installed.

__ Use a single-lever mixing faucet or have faucet handles that are easy to grasp.

__ Bathroom flooring should be matte-finished, textured tile, or low pile commercial carpet (no throw rugs or bathmats).

__ Bathroom lighting should be even and without glare. The light switch is near the door.

__ Bathroom door opens outward.

__ Bathroom has a safe supplemental heat source and ventilation system.

__ Outlets are ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) that protect against electric shock.
