As a caregiver, you should check stairways and halls for the following:

__ Steps are in good condition and are free of objects.

__ Steps have nonskid strips. Carpeting on steps is securely fastened and free of fraying or holes.

__ Smoke detectors are in place in hallways and near sleeping areas.

__ Sturdy handrails are on both sides of stairways and are securely fastened.

__ Light switches are located at the top and bottom of stairways and at both ends of long hallways.

__ Inside doors do not swing out over stair steps.

__ There is enough space in the stairway to avoid bumping your head.

__ Room entrances do not have raised door thresholds.

__ The leading edge of each stair tread is easily seen when walking down stairs.

__ Stairways and hallways are well lighted.
