Last Updated: February 06, 2008 Related resource areas: Geospatial Technology

Digitizing is representing an object, image, or document by a finite set of digital values. The result is called digital representation or, more specifically, a digital image. The digital values in digitized images are called pixels. Pixels are the smallest individual elements of an image. The digitizing process stores the pixel values in rows and columns.

Digitizing is accomplished by a variety of methods including scanners, electronic digitizing platforms, and digital cameras.
