Decorative contact lenses that give the effect of cat eyes, snake eyes or solid black or white, or flames or team logos, even if not used to correct vision, have the same risks as corrective contact lenses.

STAR CITY, Ark. - Contact lenses may be a cool finishing touch for a Halloween costume, but if handled improperly, they can become an eye health nightmare, said Jane Newton, Lincoln County extension agent for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

On the market are lenses that give the effect of cat eyes, snake eyes or solid black or white, or flames or even team logos.

"Although decorative or costume, contact lenses can be found marketed and distributed through sources such as beauty salons, flea markets, convenience stores, beach shops, and the Internet, the Food and Drug Administration requires a valid lens prescription to buy them," she said.

Decorative contact lenses, even if not used to correct vision, have the same risks as corrective contact lenses, including infections such as conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye; corneal ulcers and scratches. Any of these could lead to blindness.

"Purchase special effect contact lenses from your optometrists and ophthalmologists, who are licensed to dispense lenses, she said.

Points to keep in mind when considering costume contacts:

  • Do not swim or sleep in decorative contact lenses.
  • Do not share or swap them with friends.
  • Always clean and disinfect your lenses before and after you wear them.
  • If you have any pain, burning, redness, tearing, or sensitivity to light while wearing any type of contact lenses, see your eye care professional immediately.
