Energy Drinks: Vitamins

Energy drinks typically add a variety of B Vitamins. They can vary widely in the types and amounts of vitamins supplemented in each serving. Here are two examples of beverages' mineral content listings:

  • Enviga – Calcium 20% DV (200 mg)
  • SoBe Essential Energy – Zinc 20% DV
  • Coke One – 15% Magnesium & Zinc

Vitamin A

  • Most had no Vitamin A
  • Glaceau vitamin water
    • 25% DV in a bottle
  • Upper Limit established
    • About 280% to 335% of the recommended intake

Vitamin C

  • Sometimes added
  • Range:
    • Glaceau Vitamin Water (20 oz.) = 100% DV
    • SoBe Essential Energy (16 oz.) = 200% DV
    • Rock Star (24 oz.) = 300% DV
  • Upper Limit established
    • About 2200% to 2600% of the recommended intake

Vitamin E

  • Most had no Vitamin E
  • Aquafina Alive Water Beverage (16.9 oz.)
    • 20% DV
  • Upper Limit established
    • About 5500% to 6600% of the recommended intake

Vitamin K

  • None had Vitamin K listed on label
  • Green tea naturally contains Vitamin K
    • No upper limit established BUT…
    • Warfarin and other blood thinning medications

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

  • Sometimes added
  • Range:
    • AMP Energy Mountain Dew (16 oz.) = 40% DV
    • Full Throttle (24 oz.) = 60% DV
    • Rock Star (24 oz.) = 600% DV
  • No Upper Limit established

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

  • Frequently added
  • Range:
    • Aquafina Alive Water Beverage (16.9 oz.) = 20% DV
    • Red Bull (8.3 oz.) = 100%
    • Rock Star (24 oz.) = 150% DV
  • Upper Limit established
    • About 165% to 250% of the recommended intake
