Equine Bog Spavin

Last Updated: May 14, 2007 | Related resource areas: Horses

A bog spavin is a soft distention on the inside front part of the hock caused by inflammation of the synovial membrane. Horses with straight hocks have increased strain on the hocks, causing inflammation of the bursa. This inflammation leads to increased production of synovial fluid. This condition rarely interferes with the functionality of the horse. Young horses may have bog spavins appear and disappear spontaneously.
