Tractors in Precision Agriculture

  • Most commonly, the term tractor[1] is used to describe the distinctive farm vehicle.
  • A more detailed definition of a tractor is a vehicle designed to provide a high tractive effort at slow speeds.
  • Purpose of tractors include:
    • Hauling a trailer or machinery used in agriculture or construction.
  • Tractors come in many sizes from lawn and garden size to an 8 wheel model and bigger.
  • These tractors use John Deere’s Starfire technology[2].
    • This technology is similar to the cotton pickers and combines, which also uses a GPS device.
    • Like the cotton pickers and combines, the tractor is guided through the field however the farmer sets it up.
    • The tractor can travel in circles, curves, or straight paths through the field.
