Forages

Last Updated: December 10, 2007 Related resource areas: Horses

Forages should be the starting point of any horse feeding program. Good quality forage (pasture/hay) provides energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. A horse should be fed a minimum of one percent of its body weight in forage dry matter per day. The two types of forages are legumes and grasses.
